Open Spot
Open Spot is another application released by Google which provides the latest information on free parking spots in your area posted by other open spot users.
Everyone at some time has felt the pain caused by not getting a parking space when you most need one, and to address this exact issue Google has developed a new Android application ‘Open Spot’.
This application relies on details of the latest car parking spaces sourced and provided by users, for users. Integrated into the Google maps system, Open Spot adds tabs to your current local on Google maps, identifying the free car parking space. With the passage of time the colour of these spaces on the map changes from red through to yellow to indicate that you’d better get a move on before it disappears.
This application is expected to catch on thanks to Google’s worldwide user base being large. When about to leave a parking space, open the application which identifies your location, inform Open Spot of the new free space and it will add a marker to the map for everyone else to see using Google Maps Navigation on their Android smartphones.
At the moment ‘Open Spot’ is only available in the US, Canada and the Netherlands, but more locations are expected very soon the UK will most probably be the next to get access to the service.
Safety First
Travelling abroad for business or pleasure, the best way to commute to the airport is by your own car, which is probably the second most valuable item after your house.
The two things to protect your car against while you are away are damage and theft.
Damage:
Besides inclement weather, perpetrators and vandals have left many who return to their cars after parking them to hefty bill in damage repair.
At an airport damage to your car could be caused by people who are poor at parking their car or by negligent careless people who just do not care about others. If this happens do not expect to find the culprit even if the park has CCTV as it is unlikely that the authorities would be prepared to spend hours going through camera footage to help you find the culprit.
The only optimistic fact is that this rarely happens and the chances it could happen to your car are remote.
Theft:
Onsite car parks do not identify the owner of the cars when you insert your entry ticket to gain access and insert your paid ticket into the machine on the way out. Any thief who enters the car park with a stolen car to obtain an entry ticket could very easily break into your car, pay for the stay and exit with your car.
Best option; choose an offsite car park so that you know who to challenge for any damage to your car whereby at an airport it could be anybody.
